In the Herb Garden

I spent the weekend at my parents’ farm, an hour  of Cape Town. One of the few downsides to having my own business is how hard it is to take time off and get away, but thanks to the long weekend, I managed to to do just that. And one of the highlights of any farm visit is rummaging around in my mother’s herb and rose garden just before we leave.

Her first love is roses, but luckily for me she underplants them with lots of different herbs, berries and vegetables,  many of which make very interesting ice cream flavours.

The light drizzle that had fallen the whole morning let up around lunch, and I spent a blissful hour, secateurs in hand, wandering around the garden, clipping herbs to play with at the Creamery tomorrow. I went with old favourites (lemon verbena) as well as new experiments (pineapple sage), and I can’t wait to get into the kitchen and see how everything tastes.

After an hour, I reluctantly put away my shears and headed inside, and shortly drove back to Cape Town with my boot full of herbs. When I left, the garden was cast in fragile sunlight, clouds still threatening to roll down again from the Drakenstein into the valley, and everything smelled of damp earth and green life, and I thought to myself: what a wondrous start to a new year.

    TOTALLY get it! Last week we had a summer pgorram going on in the morning so it made life even more crazy. I want to just stay home and relax this week before swim lessons start. Summer is going to be done in a blink of an eye
