Here are some of my favourite snaps of the action, taken in the past six weeks.
FRUIT: this is such a fabulous time of year, fruit-wise. We’re getting in 40-odd kg of stone fruit a week, mainly from Kleinjongenskraal Farm in Citrusdal. Above, nectarines, prune plums, peaches. I fall in love all over again with the prune plums in particular each summer.
ICE CREAM: …and here’s where the fruit ends up, after washing, chopping, roasting and pureeing. The fruit’s such great quality at the moment, we’re trying to play ’em straight, and keep the flavours pure and uncluttered. Above, prune plum (my new favourite!), sweet cherry (a failure, just can’t get this one right), fennel pollen & peach (back from last year).
THE V&A MARKET ON THE WHARF: The market -and our stall – is now over a month old, and it’s going well. We’re particularly proud of our staff, who have such great energy and are super friendly, and make our customers’ experience tasty and special.
BACK AT THE KITCHEN:
1. The fridge in a particularly busy week, covered in spreadsheets showing what ice cream must be taken to what market/event;
2. We’re redesigning our labels to go with these natty new ice cream containers we’ll be using soon. Still a work in progress.
3. I should hide the evidence better. The sadly empty emergency ice cream sandwich container I keep stashed in the freezer, for, well, emergencies requiring the immediate consumption of an ice cream sandwich.
4. Quick snap of one of our weekly veggie bags. Full time staff have the option of buying a weekly organic veggie bag from one of our suppliers. We pay half the costs. It’s not exactly health insurance, but hopefully we’ll get there!
