V&A Food Market: First Days

This was supposed to be a blog posted entitled “Final Touches”, but to be honest, we’re still working on those (signboard or visible logo, anybody??).

The first five days ended up being the first three days, since the fire inspector declined to approve the market for trading on Wednesday – two hours after we’d already opened. So the doors closed, contractors came in to put some additional touches on the ventilation system, and we ended up re-opening, inspector-approved, on Friday.

Since opening, I have consumed inordinate amounts of food from other vendors, figured out how our scoop counter works, and spent more time at the V&A than I have in the past two years. We also made awesome marketeer friends, practiced French with tourists, got blockaded in by Red Bull Vliegtug, and sold about fifty litres of ice cream, one scoop at a time. It’s still way too early to figure out whether this market will be a success (crossing fingers), but considering that almost no one knows we’re here yet, I’m satisfied with the trading we’ve done so far. The next big step for the market is going to publicize the hell out of our location, and as interim head of the Vendors Association, I’m already building a looong list of suggestions for management.

The bottom line is, we’re there, we’re scooping, and there’s some flipping delicious food available at the market besides our ice cream (I’ll post some of my favourite menu suggestions in the week). Parking in Portswood Garage across the street is R10 for four hours, and the tourist hordes haven’t descended yet so it’s not crazy busy.

So, dear readers, bring your friends, bring your sweetheart, your work colleagues, come eat, come check it out, just say hi. And spread the word; we and our fellow marketeers need a shout out to make Cape Town’s newest market a success.

Come shake the hand that feeds you!
